about

In February 2013 I wrote or recorded a song every day. These are some of the bedroom recordings from that project -- like drawings that may turn into paintings one day.

Track Name: Better
Better out than in
Better you than me
Better or for worse
I think you’d better take a seat
There’s nothing better
Than the taste of bittersweet

Better to burn out
Better to be feared
Better to have loved and lost
Better be a hero
Yeah nothing’s better
Than the bottom dear

Better learn your lesson
Better play it cool
Better test the waters
Better admit you’re a fool
Better off without it
But that doesn’t make an empty bottle full

Better beg forgiveness
Better make amends
Better be the better person
Better off as friends
There’s nothing better than a battle when it ends
Track Name: Honeycomb
Your heart is like a honeycomb
And inside each compartment
Is a honey bee

I rest my head against your chest
And I can hear them buzzing as
They sing to me

Snug inside their waxy chambers
You don’t think about the danger
Baby

All the walls that separate them
Are as thin as tissue paper
Baby

Drunk on nectar every single bee
Believes that she’s
The only queen

Think of what will happen when
The sticky sweet surrounding them
Gives way between

Best consider this a warning
Smoke them out or they’ll start swarming
Baby

Filled with venom angry things
They will destroy themselves to sting you
Baby
Track Name: Blackmail
Tantamount to blackmail
It’s a racket it’s a ratchet
It’s so hard to click it backwards
If I slacken my attention
There I am again it’s sickening
I can’t control my actions

Did we go over how to best resist
I can’t remember if we’ve ever passed that test
Give me a moment to collect myself
I don’t know better and I think it’s gonna wreck my health

Call it a compulsion
There is something that’s repulsive
In the way it keeps me jumping
What’s the matter honey
Do you like to see me running
Cause I’m running out of something

Did we go over how to best resist
I can’t remember if we’ve ever passed that test
Give me a moment to collect myself
I don’t know better and I think it’s gonna wreck my health
Track Name: Ouija
Here are your instructions
First think of a question
If the pointer’s missing
A wineglass can fill in
Light as a feather
Feel it slide across the board
Is it just a game
Or a mysterious force

The spirits enter yes/no alphabetical
Hungry for contact as half-starved stray cats
Wary but they wanna twine round your ankles
And press against the glass

It’s only Parker Brothers magic
But it seems to work
Spill your little secrets
Like letters in a book
Spelling out the future
They can’t give you proof
But if you just let them work through you
They will speak the truth

Allow your hands to slacken
Let go your motor function
You’re an aperture an open door
You are just the passenger

If I miss the party
Don’t wait for me to show
You should start without me
I’ll send a message home
Track Name: The Fairy Came When I Was Born
every morning I dismantle it
every night it grows back up
around me like a hedge of thorns
a head of hair
the fairy came when I was born

it’s impossible to dance
imprisoned in a suit of armor
or an insect’s carapace
a beetle shell
unwork the curse until it sticks

when I break the spell I’ll climb down
from the tower where I wake and sleep
I’ll make my way through the vast
labyrinth that surrounds the keep
permeable I will feel
the cool air on my naked skin
until then this protection
keeps the beasts out and it keeps me in

in a dream I dream I am
a bird or I have wings to fly
and I can fly over all this
and somebody
will wake me from it with a kiss

drawn the latch and shot the bolt
I know the only rescue comes
from deep within safe rooms like mine
the secret: this
door unlocks only from inside

when I break the spell I’ll climb down
from the tower where I wake and sleep
I’ll make my way through the vast
labyrinth that surrounds the keep
permeable I will feel
the cool air on my naked skin
until then this protection
keeps the beasts out and it keeps me in
Track Name: Days End
Days end
Time is swift cascading sand
Join hands
Makes me want to make plans

Breaks mend
Spread out to my wingspan
Wasteland
Blooming do you understand

It’s a miracle
We’re here at all

Reeds bend
Darling when the wind blows in
Till then
Will you be my best friend

It’s a miracle
We’re here at all

Days end
Till then
Join hands
Will you be my best friend
Track Name: Eggs in One Basket
I’m gonna put all my eggs in one basket
I’m gonna put all my eggs in one basket
Give me an oracle so I can ask it
Ask it to tell me if I should

Tell me what am I so afraid of
Tell me my darling what I’m so afraid of
Someday I’ll show you just what I am made of
Paper and tinsel and glitter and wood

If you still love me I’ll be yours forever
If you still love me I’ll be yours forever
I’d take the leap cause it’s now or it’s never
Never before have I felt that I could

Before I met you I must have been lonesome
Before I met you I must have been lonesome
Don’t you dare let me go back where I came from
I’d stay right here in your arms if I could
